FARGO—Mike Hagstrom has been named the new president of St. John Paul II Catholic Schools and director of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Fargo, Bishop John Folda announced in a news release.

Hagstrom will replace Michael Smith on July 1, the release stated. Smith is leaving to take over a leadership role in a school in El Salvador.

"I am grateful for Bishop Folda's ardent support for Catholic Schools and for Dr. Smith's leadership the past four years," Hagstrom said in the release, "and I am looking forward to enhancing further our Catholic schools' legacy of excellence in a prayerful, collaborative and energetic spirit."

Hagstrom has taught religion at Fargo Shanley High School for 31 years and is a longtime chaplain's assistant and Student Council adviser at the school. He has a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in theology from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn.

The JPII Catholic Schools are Sullivan Middle School, Shanley High School, Holy Spirit Elementary and Nativity Elementary in Fargo; and Trinity Elementary in West Fargo.
