FARGO—Tuesday's Eastern Dakota Conference softball game between Fargo Shanley-Oak Grove-Park Christian and Fargo Davies may serve as foreshadowing of how tight the conference may be this spring.

The Deacons defeated the Eagles 2-1 at Sid Cichy Stadium, but Davies had the tying run at third base with one out in the top of the seventh inning.

Davies' threat ended before it could even up the game, as the Deacons recorded a double play to seal the victory.

"It was a good win," Shanley-OG-PC head coach Chad Slyter said. "We knew Davies was going to be tough because they return a lot of girls from last year. It was nice to play in a game that had several crucial playoff-type situations that we can learn from."

Shanley-OG-PC (2-0, 1-0 EDC) scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when freshman first baseman Gabby Nelson connected for an RBI-double that scored pinch runner Calli Schanzenbach.

"I just needed to relax at that point and swing at my pitch," Nelson said. "Davies is a good team and they are a team that we'll probably have to play later in the year to get to state."

The Deacons pushed their first run across in the third inning. Freshman third baseman Elena Linster hit a triple that scored senior Lauren Rotunda.

"We made a couple of unfortunate errors on defense that cost us," Davies head coach Michael Smith said. "The EDC is going to be pretty tight this year."

Davies tied the game 1-1 in the fifth inning when senior pitcher Carla Binde scored on a single off the bat of senior shortstop Morgan Smith.

The Eagles (0-3, 0-1) had runners on second and third with one out in both the third and sixth innings, but failed to get a run across as Shanley sophomore pitcher Ingrid Swanson proved capable of working out of jams.

Swanson finished the game with seven strikeouts and recorded wins in back-to-back days. Shanley-OG-PC defeated Hankinson on Monday in its season opener.

"Ingrid pitched very well," Slyter said. "She battled through a sprained ankle after the fifth inning. That was tough, but I think her staying in the game willed us and kept us in it."
