FARGO—Both Fargo Shanley-Oak Grove-Park Christian and Fargo Davies had quality scoring chances in the final minutes of their Eastern Dakota Conference girls soccer match on Tuesday, April 26, but neither squad could find the back of the net.
The Deacons and Eagles played to a 0-0 tie at Sid Cichy Stadium.
"We executed our strategy well," Shanley-OG-PC head coach Lance Hansen said. "I was pleased with our effort. We had four to five solid scoring chances in the second half, and we were able to push the ball better than we did in the first half."
The first-place Deacons are 4-1-1 overall and in EDC play. Davies (3-0-1, 3-0-1 EDC) remains three points behind the Deacons in the conference standings.
Shanley-OG-PC deployed a stingy defensive effort to counter Davies' potent offensive attack, led by senior all-state forward Jenny Marsh, who has scored five goals this spring through four matches.
Senior defender Sarah Jacobson was assigned Marsh and rarely allowed the Eagles' standout to get into open space with the ball.
"It was a nice tactical strategy," Davies head coach Nick Christianson said. "They did a nice job of putting a lot of players back deep and that closed down a lot of angles for us."
Marsh was awarded two direct free kicks during the match, but neither found the back of the net.
"Obviously we had to make sure Jenny Marsh was covered," Hansen said. "We man-marked her the whole game and made sure not to giver her many chances."
With just under 10 minutes remaining in the match, Davies senior midfielder Jaiden Langlie found Marsh in the box, but Marsh's shot rolled wide.
Minutes later, Shanley junior Brookelyn Dew got a pass in space and nearly got a shot past Davies goalkeeper Kai Erickson, but Erickson was able to control the ball inside the box to eliminate the threat.
The Eagles had a corner kick with 1 minute, 24 seconds remaining, but a header from Langlie went over the crossbar.
"We need to find other ways to score goals and get opportunities to close out games," Christianson said. "Getting goals off free kicks and other set pieces are what separate teams in matches and we have to continue to work on finishing the chances we get."
FIRST HALF: No scoring.
SECOND HALF: No scoring.
