JAMESTOWN, N.D.—Minot Ryan dealt Fargo Shanley a first round loss in the North Dakota Class A state softball tournament in 2014 and 2015. The third time was the charm for the Deacons.
Pitcher Molly Schmidt worked around some dicey situations to throw a complete game in the 7-1 win Thursday, June 2, at Lyle Lawrence Field.
"It got a little nerve wracking, but I knew I could rely on my defense to make plays," Schmidt said.
Shanley scored two runs in the first on a fielder's choice and a bases loaded walk, but also left the bases packed. The Deacons made it 3-0 in the second on Allison Goddin's two-out double to the left-field fence.
Schmidt kept the lead there a half inning later, getting out of a no-out, bases loaded jam with two infield fly outs and a strikeout. Living dangerously finally caught up to the Deacons in the fourth, but all Ryan got out of three Shanley errors was one run on a wild pitch.
"They had some runners on," said Shanley head coach Chad Slyter, "but Molly's done a good job all year of stranding runners. She doesn't get too intense, stays even keel all the way through it."
Shanley, meanwhile, figured out what the RBI is all about. Lauren Rotunda's two-run double in the fifth inning gave the Deacons some breathing room at 6-1.
"I knew the runs would come, I wasn't worried," Schmidt said.
It was the 20th win of the year for Shanley, a team goal at the beginning of the season.
"We figured if we got to 20, we would be right where we want to be," Slyter said.
