This is a Deacon Alert to inform you of the passing of Mary Eleanor (Schmitz) Bergeman ('35) on Wednesday, Feb. 10th.
Eleanor was the sister of Glorianne (Schmitz) Roach, Jim Schmitz ('52), Patty (Schmitz) Willits ('56) and Bob Schmitz ('56).
Mary Eleanor Bergeman, 98, passed away at her home in Canon City on February 10, 2016. She was born in Grand Rapids, North Dakota, October 21, 1917 and was the mother of 10 children, grandmother of 29, great grandmother of 56, great-great grandmother of 7 and numerous step great grandchildren.
She is survived by 9 children, two sisters and two brothers. Surviving children are: Jerry (Norma) Bergeman, Florissant, CO; Peggy (Russell) McDaniel, Pueblo, CO; Patricia (Larry) VanGorder, Solana Beach , CA; Carole (Jim) Zaffino, Palm Springs, CA; Barbara (Ed) Cingoranelli, Alabaster, AL; Mary Anne (Mark) Mauler, Parker, CO; Matt (Debbie) Bergeman, Canon City, CO; Mike (Cheryl) Bergeman, Canon City, CO; and Judy Mackowick, Canon City, CO; daughter-in-law, Carole (Bob) Bergeman, Parker, CO. Surviving siblings are: Glorianne Roach, Ft. Ransom, ND; Jim Schmitz, Miles City, MT; Patty Willits, Conyers, GA; and Bob Schmitz, Fargo, ND.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis; son, Bob Bergeman; son-in-law, Kevin Mackowick; grandson, Scott Bergeman; great granddaughter, Jessica Bentley; brothers, Cecil and Bill Schmitz and sister, Charlotte Lutjen.
Eleanor was able to spend her last remaining years in her home thanks to her children’s help. A special thanks to Judy Mackowick who was her live-in caregiver for the past year.
Eleanor and her husband, Louis, owned and operated Bergeman’s grocery at 223 Main Street in the early 1950‘s. Eleanor was retired from the Colorado Department of Corrections. Following retirement, she devoted many hours to charity, especially Loaves and Fishes and the Pregnancy Center. Eleanor was the 1978 Colorado Mother of the Year. She was a life-long member of St. Michael Parish and served on boards and committees in support of her church and St. Michael School. Eleanor lived a long, joyful, productive life and was a fervent Bronco fan. She is now at peace with her Savior, Jesus Christ.
Recitation of the Rosary, 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 14; Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 15, both services at St. Michael Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Pregnancy Center, 508 Greenwood Ave., Canon City, CO 81212.
