This is a Deacon Alert to inform you of the passing of Gregory S. Grooters on Monday, Nov. 14th.
Greg served as a math teacher and coach for cross country & track at Shanley from the Fall of 1982 to the Spring of 1986.
Gregory S. Grooters, 56, of Fargo, ND, passed away Monday, November 14, 2016, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo.
Greg was born January 1, 1960 in Turtle Lake, ND, to Larry Grooters and Hazel (Ussatis) Grooters. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Math Education and Computer Science from Valley City State University, then taught math at Fargo Shanley High School, West Fargo High School, and Moorhead High School and also coached track and cross country. He returned to the West Fargo School district in 1998, serving as an assistant principal at West Fargo High School. Greg earned a Masters degree in Education from North Dakota State University and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of North Dakota. In 2005, Dr. Grooters was chosen as head principal to oversee the building of Sheyenne 9th grade center. Under his supervision and leadership his contributions led to a smooth transition to West Fargo's second high school, Sheyenne High School. In his role as head principal at Sheyenne, Greg created an environment where students and staff were encouraged to support one another and value relationships. Sheyenne High School was his second family. Greg made a lasting impression on educators across the region and will be greatly missed.
In 1997 Greg was inducted into the Valley City State University Hall of Fame with the 1981 cross country team and was selected as the North Dakota High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1989 for his time coaching the West Fargo High School Cross Country team. Greg was selected as an NAIA academic all-American in 1981.
Greg married Robin Schlegel in 1989 and had two daughters, Ellie and Brooke Grooters.
He enjoyed spending time at the lake with family and friends, vacationing in Florida, following his daughters sporting events, along with all Sheyenne High School activities. His hobbies included officiating high school and collegiate basketball games, running road races and marathons, and following the Miami Dolphins.
Greg is survived by his wife, Robin; daughters, Ellie and Brooke; parents, Larry and Hazel Grooters; sisters, Kim (Rodger) Lipetzky, Karla (Torrey) Callies, Kristi (Chris) Stuber; nieces, Anna and Lane Lipetzky; and nephews, Lukas Davidson and Cole Callies.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Fargo.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 4:00 p.m. Friday Nov. 18 at the church.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Fargo
