This is a Deacon Alert to inform you of the passing of Irene Moenkedick on Friday, July 22nd.
Irene was the mother of Bruce Moenkedick, Judy (Moenkedick) Miller, Gregory Moenkedick, Karen (Moenkedick) Hanson, John Moenkedick, Fr. Leo Moenkedick, Florence (Moenkedick) Schmitz, Mary (Moenkedick) Storrusten, Andrew Moenkedick and Diane (Moenkedick) Mertens ('83).
Irene Minten was born on January 18, 1929 in Perham, Minnesota. Her parents were the late Peter and Gertrude (VanErp) Minten. Irene graduated from the Little Falls High School with the class of 1947. She attended a post secondary school in Fergus Falls where she received a teaching degree in 1948. On June 13, 1950 Irene was united in marriage with John Henry Moenkedick at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Butler, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with 11 children. Irene and John made their home on the Moenkedick Family Farm in rural Perham before moving to Ada for a year in 1959. From 1960-1964 they returned to the Moenkedick Family Farm in Perham. They moved to Mahnomen in 1964 and farmed there until 1969 before returning to the family farm in rural Perham. On January 15, 2002 John passed away. Irene continued to reside on the family farm until making her home at Briarwood in Perham. Irene also resided at Vergas Assisted Living and currently Diamond Willow in Detroit Lakes.
Irene enjoyed reading, gardening and attending decades of sporting events for her children and grandchildren. During the years of her grandchildren births, she was a loving suitcase grandma.
On July 22, 2016 Irene passed away peacefully at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota at 87 years of age. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Preceding Irene in death were her parents; husband, John; son, Nicholas Moenkedick; brother, Martin Minten; brother, Joe Minten; sister-in-law, Marianne Minten; brothers-in-law, John Weis and Dwaine Altringer.
Irene is survived by her children: Bruce (Paulette) Moenkedick of New York Mills; Judy (Dennis) Miller of Lawton, ND; Gregory (Tina) Moenkedick of Verndale; Karen (David) Hanson of Mason City, IA; John (Charlene) Moenkedick of Deer Creek; Fr. Leo Moenkedick of Gillman; Florence (Tim) Schmitz of Hinkley; Mary (Dan) Storrusten of Pelican Rapids; Andrew (Katy) Moenkedick of Perham; Diane (Tom) Mertens of Devils Lake, ND; daughter-in-law, Vickie Moenkedick of Verndale; 44 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; sisters: Mary Weis of Emily and Lucille Altringer of Waverly; sister-in-law, Delores Minten of Perham; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., with parish prayers at 7:30 p.m., Monday, July 25, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Perham. Visitation will continue from 10-11 a.m., followed by the funeral Mass at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 26, at the church.
